The honest answer is that most of a kitchen remodel is waiting, and almost none of the waiting happens while your kitchen is torn apart. Understanding which is which is the difference between a project that feels manageable and one that feels endless.
Here is a realistic Pinellas County timeline.
The short version

From first showroom visit to cooking in the finished kitchen, plan on two to four months for a typical remodel that keeps the existing layout. Your kitchen is only genuinely out of action for a fraction of that — usually two to four weeks.
Moving walls, relocating plumbing or gas, or permit-triggering work extends the front end considerably.
Stage 1: Design and selection — one to three weeks
How long this takes is almost entirely down to you. Homeowners who arrive with measurements, photos and a clear idea of style can finalize a layout in a single visit plus a follow-up. Homeowners still deciding between a white shaker and a walnut slab take longer, which is fine — but it is the stage most people underestimate.
Appliances must be chosen here, not later. Cabinet openings are built to appliance dimensions.
Stage 2: Cabinet lead time — several weeks
This is the longest single block, and it is unavoidable. Semi-custom cabinets are built to order after you approve the layout. Painted and specialty finishes take longer than stock stains.
The important thing: you keep using your kitchen throughout this stage. Nothing is demolished. People who schedule demolition early and then wait on cabinets spend weeks without a kitchen for no reason.
Full custom cabinets from a cabinet shop typically run considerably longer — often months, because your kitchen queues behind other one-off builds. See our comparison of semi-custom versus custom cabinets.
Stage 3: Demolition and trades — a few days to a week
Old cabinets and countertops come out. If plumbing or electrical is moving, those trades work in this window. Book them well in advance; electricians and plumbers in Pinellas County are routinely scheduled weeks out, and waiting until demolition day to call is the most common self-inflicted delay we see.
Permits, where required, are pulled before this stage, not during it.
Stage 4: Cabinet installation — a few days
Uppers first, then bases, leveled and joined, with fillers and trim to close out to the walls. For a standard kitchen this is genuinely a matter of days. Our own crews handle this. The step-by-step installation guide covers what happens in detail.
Stage 5: Countertop templating and fabrication — one to three weeks
The stage people forget. Countertops cannot be measured until cabinets are installed and level, because the template follows the cabinets as built. So templating happens after cabinet install, then the slab is cut, edged and finished, then it comes back to be set.
That means a stretch where you have cabinets but no work surface and no sink. It is normal, it is unavoidable, and knowing about it in advance makes it far less irritating. We fabricate and install countertops in house, which keeps this window as tight as it can be.
Stage 6: Finishing — a few days
Sink and appliance hookups, backsplash if you are having one, hardware, door and drawer adjustment, and touch-ups. Flooring, if you are replacing it, is usually scheduled around this point — we supply flooring and can refer installers we work with.
What actually causes delays
- Changing an appliance after ordering. A different fridge width means a rebuilt cabinet and a fresh lead time.
- Booking trades late. The single biggest avoidable delay.
- Ordering countertops early. Not possible — they template off installed cabinets.
- Skipping the field measure. Ordering from a sketch rather than a measured room.
- Changing the layout mid-project. Every downstream stage resets.
Planning around it
The practical advice: do all your deciding before you order, keep your kitchen intact through the cabinet lead time, and set up a temporary kitchen — microwave, kettle, a table — before demolition rather than during it. Two to four weeks without a kitchen is manageable when you have planned for it.
