Refacing is pitched as the sensible middle path: a new-looking kitchen without the cost or disruption of a full replacement. Sometimes that is exactly right. Often it is money spent on a kitchen that still has the problems it started with.
Here is how to tell the difference before you commit.
What each one actually involves
Refacing keeps your existing cabinet boxes in place. The doors and drawer fronts are replaced, and the visible box edges are covered with a matching veneer or laminate. New hinges and hardware go on. The layout, the box construction and the interior stay exactly as they are.
Replacing removes the boxes entirely and starts from the walls. New cabinets, new interiors, and the opportunity to change the layout, the sizes, and how the storage works.
Start by looking inside the boxes

This is the whole decision, and it takes two minutes. Open a base cabinet under the sink and look at the box.
Refacing can work if:
- The boxes are plywood, solid, square and dry
- There is no swelling at the base, particularly under the sink
- Doors currently hang straight and close properly
- The layout genuinely works for how you cook
- You are happy with the existing storage and interior fittings
Replace instead if:
- The boxes are particleboard, especially with any swelling or soft spots
- There is water damage under the sink — extremely common in Florida kitchens
- Boxes are out of square, or shelves sag
- You want to change the layout, move an appliance, or add an island
- You want deeper drawers, pull-outs, or better corner storage
That fourth point is the one people talk themselves out of. Refacing cannot fix a layout. If the reason you dislike your kitchen is that the fridge blocks a walkway or there is nowhere to put a dishwasher, new doors will not change how it feels to cook in.
The Florida humidity problem
Particleboard boxes and Gulf Coast humidity are a poor combination, and most kitchens more than fifteen or twenty years old in this area were built with particleboard. Once it has absorbed moisture it swells, loses screw-holding strength and does not recover.
Refacing a swollen box means fixing new doors to a carcass that is already failing. The doors will look excellent for a while, and then the hinges will start pulling loose from softened material.
Look under the sink first. That cabinet tells you more than the rest of the kitchen combined.
The cost comparison people get wrong
Refacing is genuinely cheaper than replacing — but the gap narrows considerably once you compare like with like. Quality refacing with solid wood doors and proper veneer work is not a budget job, and at that point you are often within reach of new semi-custom cabinets bought at wholesale.
The comparison that matters is not “refacing versus retail replacement”. It is refacing versus wholesale replacement, which is a much closer contest. Our 2026 kitchen remodel cost guide sets out what a full cabinet replacement actually costs here.
Time and disruption
Refacing is faster and less disruptive — typically days rather than weeks, with your kitchen broadly usable throughout. That is a real advantage if you are working around a household that cannot lose the kitchen.
Replacement takes longer, mostly in cabinet lead time rather than installation. See how long a kitchen remodel actually takes for the stage-by-stage version.
A straight answer
We sell and install cabinets, so the honest disclosure is that we do not offer refacing. That also means we have no reason to talk you out of it.
If your boxes are sound plywood, your layout works, and you simply want a different look, refacing is a sensible choice and we will tell you so. If your boxes are swollen particleboard or your layout is the actual problem, refacing spends real money without solving anything — and that is worth knowing before you spend it.
Bring a photo of the inside of your sink cabinet to our showroom at 10286 US Highway 19 N in Pinellas Park and we will give you a straight assessment. Open seven days a week, and design consultations are free. You can also send photos and measurements online, or see the cabinet lines we carry.
